Good afternoon dear readers and welcome back to kenbaxter.com! I am Ken Baxter of Las Vegas and today is Friday, April 4th, 2014. As you may already know, our public charity Green Global is constantly working to raise awareness about the benefits of going green, using clean energy and other renewable resources, and the negative effects of climate change on our great planet. Though we tirelessly promote our cause across the globe, today I’d like to bring the spotlight on our little corner of the world – the state of Nevada!
Once unimaginable, solar and wind harnessing is now one of our best energy production strategies and as a bonus, both sources are indefinitely renewable! Solar and wind power are increasingly becoming topics of conversation as the world shifts from filthy coal, oil and other fossil fuels, to the clean and renewable energy provided by the wind and the sun. Some fascinating facts about these alternative power sources:

- It would take only around .3% of the world’s land area to supply all of our electricity needs via solar power.
- The area of roof space available in Australia is enough to provide all of the nation’s electricity using solar panels.
- The Earth receives more energy from the sun in an hour than is used in the entire world in one year.
- The solar industry creates 200 to 400 jobs in research, development, manufacturing and installation for every 10 megawatts of solar power generated annually.
Due to Nevada’s vast solar, wind, geothermal, and biomass resources, the state has excelled at meeting demands of the southwest region. In fact, Nevada’s large scale wind project, the Spring Valley Wind Farm, now generates enough energy for 45,000 homes and many more projects are under development to increase capacity and energy production. Additionally, because of the success of these investments in energy production, Nevada will receive over $820 million in employment and property benefits!
In addition, nearly $500 million in tax abatements are being offered by the state of Nevada to those who invest in our clean energy projects. Did you know that clean energy investment in Nevada has accelerated so rapidly in the past five years that it is now worth well over $5 billion? Indeed, it has been an economic success story for the “Silver State” that is symbolized this year by three major trade associations holding their annual events in the state. American Wind Energy Association, Geothermal Energy Association, and Solar Energy Industries Association will all be hosting their annual summits this summer and fall!

As you may remember, back in December I went for a visit to the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System which is located in the California Mojave Desert. Just forty miles southwest of Las Vegas, this solar thermal power project generates enough electricity to power more than 140,000 homes and nearly doubles the amount of commercial solar thermal electricity produced in the United States today! Bechtel and Solar Partners (a partnership of BrightSource Energy, NRG, and Google) has teamed up to build this, the world’s largest, solar thermal facility. What an amazing accomplishment for the USA!
